Mandatory bike helmets? Get serious | The Grid TO.
Get Serious? Really? How could anyone who hasn’t been hit over the head even try to make the argument above. Look I know that I am biased, given how my spinal cord injury occurred, and that I don’t even know for sure if a helmet would have prevented it…but for cripes sake!
Most accidents on bikes don’t happen from collisions with cars! Mine didn’t and I’d bet you’d find that statistic somewhere. We already make it mandatory for kids to wear helmets (and nothing gets me angrier then seeing one riding with the helmet swinging from the handle bars!) and motorcyclists have to wear them…
Why the hell should pedal cyclists be exempt from something as simple as wearing a helmet?
I can already hear Arthur ready with his argument for why seatbelt laws are stupid…but even he wears a bicycle helmet. You want to know why the government has to impose laws like this? Because of morons making arguments like this!
You think you need to just solve the problem of traffic with bikes and there will be no need for helmets?
Try telling that to a 17 year old with a plastic bag full of wet swimming trunks.

i don’t see a problem with making helmets mandatory. My only problem is the logistics and reality of putting police resources into enforcing the law when there are higher priority items to budget police money for.
if its one of those things where cops stop somebody they come across fine, but if i see helmet “traps”, i might get a little annoyed.

Well it’s not like you see spot checks for motorcycle riders checking for helmets, so I think THAT fear is a little farfetched for bicyclists…but you are kind of missing the point as to why the argument get my nomination for moronic one of the year. Yes, some accidents on bikes are caused by cars and bikes being on the roads together. We all get that. However, it always amazes me how many cyclists think that nothing they do is their own fault on the road…like not stopping at stop signs…or lights…or riding between cars that are stopped because god forbid they should put a foot down and wait.
Beyond that, helmets would save injuries that have nothing to do with cars…and the idea that helmet laws wouldn’t be needed if there were just better rules for drivers or better lanes for cyclists is…moronic.
